FREE JAZZ TODAY
The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival completes its three-day New York run today with four hours of free music in Tompkins Square Park.
The finale began at 3 p.m. and is scheduled through 7 p.m. Admission is free, and the program is open to all ages.
Ravi Coltrane headlines a lineup that also includes the Billy Hart Quartet, Kassa Overall and Vanisha Gould.
A lineup built around lineage
Ravi Coltrane carries a family name connected to John and Alice Coltrane, while his own career spans decades of performance and composition. Billy Hart provides another living connection to modern jazz history. Kassa Overall combines live drumming, electronic production and rap.
Why hip-hop listeners should care
Jazz and hip-hop share more than samples. Both cultures value rhythmic invention, individual voice, reinterpretation and spontaneous response. Kassa Overall makes that connection especially accessible for listeners accustomed to programmed drums and rap vocals.
