38:46 OF CONTROL
The Jets opened their season with the kind of victory that rarely requires an excuse afterward.
New York defeated Tennessee 23–10 behind an efficient Geno Smith return, a 100-yard performance from Breece Hall and a defense that kept the Titans out of the end zone until the final three minutes.
Smith completed 19 of 24 passes for 215 yards. Hall carried 22 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. The Jets possessed the ball for 38:46, including one 19-play drive lasting almost 12 minutes.
The right first step
One win does not resolve the larger franchise questions. It does reveal a workable identity: efficient quarterback play, a committed rushing attack and a defense that avoids giving away possessions.
