Macklemore Says Pro-Palestinian Remarks Cost Him Ed Sheeran Tour Dates

SPEECH, VENUES & THE PRICE OF A TOUR SLOT

Macklemore says he has been removed from the remaining U.S. portion of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour following pro-Palestinian comments at MetLife Stadium.

He had been scheduled for eight of the final 10 American concerts. Tour promoter Messina Touring Group said certain venue owners would not host dates containing Macklemore. Sheeran has since said the removal was not his decision.

Who controls a major tour?

A stadium tour is not controlled by one artist alone. Promoters, venue operators, insurers, sponsors and ticketing partners can all affect whether an opening performer remains commercially acceptable.

Macklemore denies accusations of antisemitism and says his criticism is directed at Israeli government actions. Coverage must distinguish criticism of government policy, advocacy for Palestinian rights and hatred directed at Jewish people.

The independent-artist lesson

Artists joining tours should understand cancellation rights, morals clauses, political-speech restrictions, payment after removal and who controls public statements. Freedom to speak does not automatically guarantee a private booking—but the decision-making should be transparent.

Update: Sheeran says the promoter, not him, made the decision.
